Best OTF Knives (2026): Honest Picks for Every Budget

By Tactical Chris, Uppercut Tactical. Last reviewed: October 12, 2026. Prices and specs are from each maker's own product page on that date; they change.

Disclosure: We sell the SideKick, FrontKick, Wasp, and Hornet, which is why they're on this list. We also included OTFs we don't sell, including more expensive ones that beat ours on fit and steel, so you can make a real comparison.

Short answer

The best OTF knife depends on your budget and the size you want to carry. Around $25–$50, a double-action OTF with a metal handle and a simple steel like 3Cr13 handles everyday cutting. From about $300 to $550 you get much tighter tolerances, premium steels like MagnaCut, M390MK, or D2, and lifetime warranties from established U.S. makers. Choose nano or full-size first, then check your local knife laws.

How to choose

Nano or full-size?

Nanos have blades around 2 inches. They ride on a keychain or in a coin pocket and handle boxes, tags, and string. Full-size OTFs, around 3 to 4 inches, give you a real grip for bigger jobs. A small blade is not automatically legal everywhere.

Steel: what you get for the money

3Cr13 is easy to sharpen but dulls faster. D2 holds an edge longer but can rust if neglected. MagnaCut and M390MK are premium stainless steels with excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance, and they cost more.

Single or double action?

Every knife on this list is double action: the same switch opens and closes the blade. A single-action OTF springs open, but you have to retract it by hand. Read more in single vs. double action OTFs.

Switch position

Most OTFs have the switch on the side of the handle. The FrontKick and the Benchmade Infidel put it on the face of the handle, which some people find easier to run with gloves or many times a day. See front-slider vs. side-slider OTFs.

What a budget OTF gives up

Expect some blade play when the blade is out, looser tolerances, and more misfires if the track gets dirty. No OTF is a prying tool. A $300+ OTF from an established maker is tighter, uses better steel, and comes with a stronger warranty. That's a real difference, not marketing.

Avoid fakes

A "Microtech" or "Benchmade" OTF for $40 is a counterfeit. Buy premium brands from the maker or an authorized dealer. See how to spot a fake OTF online.

Picks by use

  • Tight budget, one knife: SideKick (ours). Full-size, with a glass breaker.
  • You open and close it all day: FrontKick (ours). The face switch is easy to find by feel.
  • Smallest carry: Wasp or Hornet (ours).
  • Best premium all-rounder: Microtech Ultratech Gen IV or Kershaw Livewire.
  • Lightest premium: CRKT Twist Tighe Compact Automatic, at 1.90 oz.
  • Largest duty blade: Benchmade Infidel. A longer blade also runs into more legal limits.

FAQ

What is the best OTF knife for the money?

If you're under $50, look for a double-action OTF with a metal handle and a blade size you'll actually carry. If you want a knife for life, a premium model from an established maker with a lifetime warranty is worth the extra money.

Are OTF knives legal?

In most U.S. states adults can own one, but some states and cities ban OTFs, limit blade length, or restrict carry. Check our OTF knife laws by state before you buy or carry. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are cheap OTF knives safe?

Yes, with care. Keep your fingers clear of the front of the handle, and check that the blade has locked before each use.

How do I keep an OTF from misfiring?

Keep the blade and track clean and dry, use only a light lubricant, and never retract a dirty blade. See our OTF cleaning and misfire guide.

Can I buy an OTF online?

Often yes, but federal and state rules apply to shipping automatic knives. See is it legal to buy an OTF knife online.
